All academics, practitioners, lawyers, and government officials worldwide are invited to submit a proposal.
Conference Theme
Exploring Various Legal Methods for Sustainable Development: Theoretical and Practical Contributions from Asia
Today, sustainable development has become a common concern among societies internationally. Notably, the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development undertakes that the economic, social, and environmental dimensions be balanced among all countries and all stakeholders. In the past, economic development and environmental protection, among other things, tended to be seen as conflicting values. However, both are now viewed as important values to be pursued back-to-back, hand-in-hand, with adequate coordination between them. Recently, we have been able to observe new and diversifying tools/techniques/methods for pursuing sustainability in collaborations across different fields of international law, along with traditional international legal approaches.
For example, World Trade Organization (WTO) members are close to reaching an agreement to establish international restrictions on fisheries subsidies, including shipbuilding subsidies, that are harmful to the environment. In addition, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) members are continuing their creation of a list of environment-friendly products that can be afforded preferable treatment in the course of international trade. Furthermore, non-binding tools such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); standards on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing; green finance; and climate litigations are becoming prominent.
We welcome paper proposals from scholars and practitioners globally that showcase one or more legal methods that promote collaboration among States and non-State actors as well as collaboration that cross-cut sectorial divides among the economic, social and environmental pillars to foster sustainable development wholistically.
Proposals for papers are welcome in all areas of international law, including:
・theory and history of international law
・international organizations and other international entities
・international dispute settlement
・security
・international humanitarian law
・international environmental and energy laws
・the law of the Sea
・international commercial law
・private international law
・international trade and investment law
・international human rights law
* Preference will be given to proposals that focus on issues prominent in Asia.
Submission Details
Proposals must be emailed to 2022asiansiljp@gmail.com by 23:59, February 28, 2022, in the applicant’s time zone (Submissions are now closed).
Submissions must include the following:
1. An abstract of an unpublished paper (The abstract must have a maximum of 500 words, including the title.)
2. The proposal author’s CV of no more than 2 pages. The CV must include the author’s contact details and a list of relevant publications. Membership of the Asian Society of International Law and/or the Japan Chapter of the Asian Society of International Law will be favorably considered.
*The submission material (abstract and the CV) must be written in English and placed in a single PDF file.
Screening Process
Proposals will be reviewed by the Research and Planning Committee of the Japan Chapter of the Asian Society of International Law. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by the end of March 2022.
The program of the conference will be posted on the homepage of the Japan Chapter of the Asian Society of International Law in late-April 2022.
Full Papers
The authors of accepted proposals must submit the full paper by June 30, 2022. The work must be unpublished elsewhere. An electronic copy will be provided to the participants of the conference.
Registration Fees and Expenses
All speakers and panelists are exempt from registration fees for the conference. Please note that the registration fees do not include any meals and reception.
All participants, including the speakers and panelists, must be able to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses.

Awards
The Best Paper Award recognizes the speaker who presents the best paper during the conference. The awarded speaker will receive a grant of ¥50,000.
Language
The working language of the conference is English, although a few sessions may be concurrently conducted in Japanese.
